I like converting my own wood.
« on: February 24, 2019, 02:07:27 PM »
I get great pleasure from converting my own wood into wood blanks and then part turning them and covering them in the outside in pva glue to slow the drying process down.
Two ash crotch pieces now turned into six bowls.

Wow, that's a long way to go for a tree Steve.
I'm looking forward to seeing the wood and what you make out of it now. Les

cheers les.

it took a while to work out what the species was as it's damned obscure for the UK and a whole website of tree surgeons were nearly stumped (no pun intended) but someone came up trumps in the end.

pity it is not keeping that much of its colour but it's still a nice timber.

the rest of the tree is arriving on monday.

Well I think I can top that! Greetings from a happy Brit woodturner on holiday in O'ahu in Hawaii. Earlier we visited the superb Lyon Arboretum in the Manoa valley near Honolulu. I just happened to mention my interest in woodturning to one of the ground staff who immediately went to much trouble in cutting some spalted Koa (Acacia koa) and African Mahogany (Khaya sp.). Whether I can get them back to the UK when we fly home on Sunday remains to be seen. Here's hoping though ::)
