I'm looking to buy a cheap planer/thicknesser and just wonder if anyone has knowledge of this one from Screwfix?

I looked at this one, and chose the Charnwood version, same machine with different colour and more importantly a different and better fence. I find it very adequate, I have made a table from rough sawn plank, but mostly it is used for small lengths from the bandsaw to make boxes. very thin e.g. 4mm timber is best done with an MDF board on the table.

Obviously I would like bigger and better, but this is one I can move around the workshop as needed and the price is right.

I have one also and am very pleased with it - and I've just noticed
it's £20 less than I paid for it about 6 months ago !!!!

It's not had a lot of use yet, the noise level is not as bad as a lot of
other reviews gave it, it's reasonably portable from one bench to
another. I've read other users moaning about moving the dust
collection system from planer to thicknesser, but, quite honestly,
it's not worth considering, taking the price into consideration. I've
also read moans that the fence is not particularly stable....well, I guess
that is a matter of how hard you want to work the machine, but
strengthening or replacing the fence with a substantial mdf or ply
or whatever home-built jobbie would be pretty simple.

I ensure that I don't take too much wood each pass and the finish,
so far' is very impressive.

For 'un-flat' pieces, I just stick them to a piece of mdf with double
sided stickers until the surface is flat, and then just turn them over
and start again.

Altogether...am I well pleased with it? - Absolutely
Would I recommend it? - Absolutely

Have a good day - regards - Jim

do these things last?

i've got a mini industrial one that is already 60+ years old and still going strong (for sale) but i can't see these ones lasting that long.

No, they are not built to last or for heavy work. It is a compromise machine, but they are cheep and fairly lightweight so can be stored in a corner and lifted into a position where they can be used, I would love a bigger, cast iron, solid machine, just can't accommodate it.

Many thanks for your thoughts and advice - collecting on Thursday.

Will be able to get some accurate planed surfaces for glueing then!
