i can only talk about what i know and as soon as i start mentioning species of timber and all their properties or where they come from peoples eyes start to glaze over.
everyone would be asleep in minutes...

Hi Steve, I disagree with you completely. I find your knowledge of timber mind blowing, and whenever someone asks "what wood" I eagerly await your response. I enjoy learning a bit more about the material many of us take for granted.

Totally agree I also eagerly await Steve's reply then instantly google the latin name he gives us to see where it grows, what it looks like before it is cut down. Though I can see that his specialised knowledge may be more welcome here than at the local football club.

Not true Steve your knowledge is an invaluable part of the forum, e.g. what is this piece? I only know it was an old blank that has been on top of the high rack and it has been there since before I replaced my ladder with a shorter one which is about 10 years... needed it today so balanced the ladder against something flimsy and climbed to the top! the label was a piece of white paper with any trace of ink long since disappeared!

Pete, i could do with a few more photos as the are so many that are white/cream with obvious growth rings.
horse chestnut, lime, sycamore and lots of other Acers can show these characteristics.

looks like an Acer to me though.

Well I started something here, more posts in a day than in the last month! Keep it up.
I have been bsy in the garden, replaceing wooden edging as the other lot went rotten.

On the turning front I turned some light pulls, Photo later.

I got a request from our local Hospice to make some 'holding hearts' these are given to the recently bereaved as somethingto hold, they have wooden crosses, but these are not suitable for everyone. Just 45*45*15mm they are meant to fit in the hand and give some comfort. I asked how many and the answer was "oh, an hundred will do" I passed this on to all club members and got some encouraging results, so it will happen. Not wood turning but wood anyway.

Steve you can see we can talk about other things besides wood!

I have also started a Face book page for club members, go to Facebook ans search for
Bury St Edmunds Woodturning Club/pages.

I am keeping the newletter going and I am nagging committee members to give me something to put in it, a photo with a write up will do.

So lets keep this going, it looks like a long haulm back to normality
