wood identification

Hi, hope someone can help in identifying the wood in the attached picture. I was pulled out of a river in Wales some 15 years ago.

Bryan Milham:
No one will be able to identify it from a piece of washed out root.
You will need to cut it across the grain and sand fairly fine, then take a good focus close up.

oh yee of little faith Bryan...

that is an oak lump but yes a fresh cut into the wood will confirm it.

The medullary rays become quite pronounced after being in the river.

John Plater:
That is interesting, I read the marks as compression timber at the base of the bole of the tree. I think its treewood.  ;)
