Goblets
« on: July 07, 2012, 07:56:19 PM »
I have been doing a series of goblets in different styles. This one is macassar ebony and ash and stands 10" tall. It has been coated inside for use. It just sold on it's first public outing, quite sad as I rather liked this one LOL

Lovely contrast with sharp detail. Little wonder is was fast mover. I think 5 more to make a set would be in order  :D, only kidding.

I coat the inside with melamine, about 10 coats on average. It has proven safe and resistant to liquids apart from red wine which has to be the best red dye for wood ever, seems to penetrate anything after a while lol. I always warn customers who buy pale coloured goblets

I love the shape - very dramatic and modern. I'm not sure about the laminations, it looses it for me, but I appear to be in a minority of one - so I guess my thought don't count.

As for coating the inside have you considered West Systems resins?

The dark wood looks more like wenge or possibly panga panga. Might just be my dodgy eyesight though!  :-\

I haven't heard of West Systems, I'll check them out thanks.

I am not into laminating personally but this was originally a way to use up some smaller scrap spindle pieces and it gelled for me. I thought wenge as well originally but my source never uses wenge and was adamant it was macassar ebony....who am I to argue LOL.

Thanks for the comments .

I reckon this is one of the more elegant goblets I have seen, well done.
