Sandy:
Would I be correct this is Spalted beech?

Thanks

seventhdevil:
please sand the endgrain to 400 grit and take a close up in sharp focus.

it does not look like beech as i can not see any medulla ray radiating from the center.

can you tell me something about the timber itself?

hardness, weight, scent, workability, size of the original tree and where in the country it was found.

Sandy:

Thanks Steve.  I’ve just cut the section for small blanks.

Attached image is the other piece I have.  Approx 4” dia, average weight, not a heavy wood, no scent I can pick up either.  I may have picked both pieces from the roadside (East Anglia) otherwise no idea where I got them.  Info probably not much help I’m afraid.

TWiG:
Pretty sure that is a young Elm tree , no heartwood developed yet ....  a view of a longitudinal cut would help confirm ..

Sandy:

Sorry for the delay, have now cut the other section I have in two, along a split line.

Two images attached.

Thanks
