Needs to be a polymerising oil i.e. Danish, Citrus, Finishing oils but not mineral oil as that doesn't dry

After Pete made the suggestion I did a search and there are lots of articles saying you can use any drying oil, just let it dry for three days to a week before applying the lacquer.

The Chestnut compatibility chart says No to Lacquer on top of Oil but it’s been incorrect before so possibly not a good source of information for this particular technique.

Twisted Trees:
The trick to any finishing technique you haven't used is to turn a coin bowl or a bud vase or something else quick and small in timber demand put the finish on to see how it goes / refine the application.
