Rustic Yew Vase
« on: March 31, 2013, 08:00:45 PM »
Happy Easter
Tried my best to rescue a split yew log fom a fateful end in the log burner.  There were several splits which I attacked with a proxon mini grinder, burning the cuts to give a natural edge look. The vase measures  6 1/2" high  x  4" dia. with a natural hole/opening in the centre.
C & C welcome again,please.

The wood has nice colouration, your carving and burning has created a good looking piece. I am growing to like the imperfect look more and more, holes and cracks seem to bring pieces to life.

I think you made a good save and considering it's Easter, the cracked egg look is very topical.

Well spotted Arcos, forgot to mention the foot. The pith was approximately 1/2" up from the bottom right on the curve, I made a groove with a skew, burnt the line with cheese wire and textured the area below with a Robert Sorby texturing tool. I hope this will stop any splitting from the pith.

What can I add, a very nice piece, interesting treatment to the base/foot, splendid save.

Hi Roderick,
Job well done. I like the enhancements you done to the splits.

As its a vase you do not have to have a foot, I would have turned the foot away and then undercut the base with a deep curve so that it sits on the outer circumference. This also helps to prevent spliting where the base is alot thicker than the wall thickness and stay steady if there is any movement.
Regards Ken

(I can see a discussion arising about when a foot is required coming up !)

Hi Roderick

Thanks for the heads up on this piece. I like the form and contrasting movement of the rim compared to the smooth egg shape of the base form.

Very nice.
