Blackwood Box
« on: February 23, 2014, 08:22:08 PM »
Well Its not so much a box, it only has a shallow internal space, I sell them as Tooth Fairy Boxes (somewhere for parents to keep their child's first lost tooth.)

Anyway, its Blackwood, turned from one of those Pyramidal blackwood bells you can buy,

It stands 190mm (7.6") by 80mm (3.2"),

C&C as you will, and for those not registered, thanks for peeking.

Not sure how I missed this one! I spotted Bryan's other post, about the yew vase, but missed this completely.

Anyway....it's always good to see work from some of the 'established' members and this piece is no exception. We've all come to expect a high standard of finish from Bryan and he certainly hasn't let us down with this. I particularly like the fact that this piece of blackwood shows its natural, dark brown colour and grain on the 'bulb' of the box, whilst the details on the rising stem and finial are as clean and crisp as ever.

If I had to write anything negative, and it seems churlish to do so, it would be the choice of such a dark timber for such a delicate subject. I can imagine pink ivory and a piece of blue-grey stained sycamore being used for girls or boys....or perhaps even a colour washed light timber, but blackwood just seems a little heavy to me.

T'is an excellent form and finish and nice repeat double cove, an flow with the final finial, which looks more as dense Ebony from the close up .. the piano's missing a key or two.

It's very different and you've found a market .. think on all those teeth ...  ;D ..

Les,

you raise a good point on coloured tooth boxes, maybe I'll think on that as an idea for the future. Although it's primary use is as an ornament for the parents with the childs tooth memento as a hidden surprise.

David,

yes, the bell I started with only gave enough height for the top of the capstan part of the finial, so I got a piece of my blackwood stock and made the top teardrop, the colour difference is just discernible, well spotted.

Hi Bryan
Great idea for a family keepsake. I like the shape, nice crisp detail and excellent finish. I also "spotted" the top teardrop is a different colour, but you've done a fine job blending it in. Have you got a design for the parents to keep their false teeth in? ;D

Great box and a lovely piece of wood.

You say about the inside how big is the hollow I take it from what you have said that it is not a true hollow form as such

Derek,

It's bored out with a ¾" forstner bit about 2 ½" deep, the finial (the capstan & teardrop) is a tight (pop) fit into it.

That's it, not hollowed, just enough for some cotton wool and a tooth.

Oh, and it's already found a new owner, who also wants a second one to go with it.
