Dragons Den
« on: March 07, 2014, 02:38:24 PM »
                 Please don't Laugh just yet
Tony has done a few pieces using Lizard nests on Oak Burrs, I fancied doing something a bit different and O T T
with colour, so asked him for a small H/F which I could use and cut out this is what I came up with.
Its been a great bit of R and R

First of all, I wouldn't laugh because my skills are not yet up to creating hollow forms. Secondly, I know several shops throughout north Wales that sell dragon-related goods. Their windows are bedecked with all manner of reproduction medieval weaponry and snakes & dragons abound. I suspect that they'd go a bomb over something like this. I also suspect that the quality is such that they wouldn't know how to price it alongside the polyester-resin based stuff that abounds in such places.

It gets my vote even though I'm not into this little niche of the market.....and it raised a smile.

Whimsical and technically wonderful IMHO. Did you do the dragons as well? I assume they are pewter? I like it a lot and though it may not go with the turning purists it is taking the whole art / craft into a realm that we don't see often enough.

Hi Les Thank You for your vote and we do appreciate that its not for everyone but it was a good bit of fun and it raised a smile.
We spend quite a lot of time Tootaling around Wales so know what you mean about the Dragons, like to look round these sort of
shops they are usually good for ideas.

Hi Pete Thank You for commenting tried to make it light hearted and a bit of fun.   As you probably know we cast our own pewter
lizards coins ect unfortunately this time we could not get a good enough cast as I wanted small Dragons and not enough detail could
be picked up, sorry to say we had to resort to buying them. The coloured lid on the top is pewter, at least we
  found a use for it.

Hi John BHT  Thank you for commenting must not leave TONY out he did turn the H/F after all
 anything to keep me quiet.

Thank You Derek for commenting.as Elm Burr is both our favourite wood, it seemed a shame to cover it all with
colour think its payed off leaving it as we have.

Hi John Thank You for commenting,  Inspiration  don't really know Tonys always saying I live on another planet
may be thats it. It might be best to keep Tony in April  I don't Shout as loud.  :)   :)

The form, design, detail and finish is stunning, the lighting in the lower picture really brings it alive ..

Well done both of you.    David

Thank You  David  ED  and  Eric    For your comments much appreciated.
             PLEASE DONT LAUGH
Well it would seem I have been proved wrong. It started off as a bit off R+R just messing about with the paint seeing what
colour mixes I could come up with, it was put on the forum because TONY had been bending my ear  (ouch)   :)   :)
The second picture was a chance shot playing again. Someone once said to me It is good to play, You learn more when you play.
 Well that's my excuse anyway.

Well I'm joining the 'Not laughing' team as well.

Yes it whimsical, the turning of the elm is excellent (but all your turning is)

The Dragons (Wyrms) might not work alone on such a piece of timber but with the painted pewter rim and colour it gains a more than interesting visual aspect. That's why we've all take to the imagery it conjures up.

I votes a big Yes for it as well.

That's a great piece. The colouring and the dragons make it more than just a turned piece. I say just in the nicest possible way, as the turning and the finish is excellent. Another stunning piece from you both. Malcolm.
