I hope you used a stainless steel fixing to attach it though.
Surely, in the interest of 'Frugality', one would simply chuck some old varnish at it and then plop it in place whilst the varnish dries, holding it in place by wedging it into the pan-drawer at the time.

.. How did you guess ... I found a suitable size screw in the bottom of the catch-all" box .. I'd recovered [somebody throw the away] the original washer, plastic interface and outer ring (as seen) it was just for a screw, looked as if it's chromed .. could have been for a bathroom/kitchen fitting, so ideal..
..
Frugality may not have been the exacted word .. more an economical repair .. it's not the first ever made .. I've done them in the past.

PS .. Should add, the wood is from a table leg, I was surprised the legs were the only wood in the table the top was MDF and wood picture veneer.
