2 Spun Platters
« on: April 13, 2014, 07:45:57 PM »
So I've been playing with the spun platters again - well before I took my ankle out.

They are all about 12" - 13" in diameter, and in beech.

  • The first is a fairly standard iridescent coloured platter,
  • The second has been textured and sprayed with yellow and red spirit stain and a final pick up on the outer area with a gold gilt cream,

Oh Lord, Lead me not into temptation…

...Oh who am I kidding, follow me, I know a shortcut!

Bryan, that's some impressive pieces, as it's beech it's not a concern about them being color work ..  ;D ..

I prefer the second image with it's texture and colors, not to say the blue doesn't work, it lacks more that it's a solid color block and the dotty center. Then both are excellent for finish.

Both these platters are very striking . The  center of the blue one blending well with the rim.
The colour and texturing on the second one are extremely well done .
It is unusual to find such bright colours pleasing to the eye.

Hi Bryan....it's the second one that does it for me...the texture is amazing! I see so many of these platters where even the briefest of glances and you know exactly how the texture was applied/created, but this little beauty makes you want to study it and work out how it was done.

the texturing took about - oh almost all of 3 seconds!

Hi Bryan

3 seconds with a Sorby texturing tool?  ;) Maybe, but it's what the final result looks like that counts. The blend of colours works superbly to create this striking piece
I also like the first one. Wouldn't say no to either of them.

3 seconds with a Sorby texturing tool?
Rod

No, not the Sorby, an Arbortech Mini. The platter was rotating at about 350rpm, arbortech at 3600rpm. Used the toolrest as a guide so I did not slip or cut too deep, one pass and that was it.
