Bird table
« on: June 13, 2014, 07:55:23 AM »
Enjoyed playing around with different turning techniques on this project. The roof is external ply covered with lead.
I am about to pull things apart but thought I would post a picture before I paint it.  The paint wil cover over the joints so you will not see how it was put together.
I am reasonably happy with the look, but am sure wood turners out there could help me by suggesting improvements- at this pont in time it is not too late for me to make changes.
Any comments would be welcome.
     Than you.    Haggy

It looks like a class act to me Haggy
Regards
Graham
I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

This is what woodturning is all about. We all post or see the wonderful turnings made by the forum members and then you post this...

... an excellently turned practical/functional item, made from easily available softwoods. I contains it all, sectional work, repetition turning, a long shapely post, additional features and woodwork.

It gets a big thumbs up from me.

Thanks for your feedback - I will go ahead and add the finishing touches.
It is going to be a wedding present - you are right, it is a class bird who is getting it BHT.
If there are turned parts you don't like please say, I have learnt a lot from  reading members comments,
particularly dr4g0nfly's keen eye (rule of thirds etc).
One thing I do know, it won't blow over easily- it weighs a ton!

Very posh, well executed and finished, shame to paint it, yet white, the leaded roof it will look more like a dovecote .. ideal Wedding present.  Well done.

I really like that, just my sort of project, smashing work.

The only tip I'd offer is give the lead a wipe of patination oil, if you haven't already, it will keep the lead from oxidising & so looking shabby in a short while.

Thank you for the positive comments, I will get hold of some patination oil for the lead Doug.- thanks ( and for giving me the web address).
I have just primed the wood with cuprinol preserver and will go hunting for some garden paint shortly.  I think I think could improve the pomel at the foot end, it needs to be more chunky.  I would imagine spindle turners know from experience what works best.  I will take a picture of the bird table when it is fully finished.
