ABWT Hands On Night
« on: June 19, 2014, 03:37:47 PM »
A few months ago I was to do a stand at one of the Avon & Bristol Woodturners Hands on evenings. Later noting that a mix up lead to Julie Herriott doing Thread Chasing instead.

Well I'm back on tonight,

Lace Bobbins are order of the day, something better seen at close distance and by small numbers at a time.

I have prepped;
some bobbins and lace making tools I've made (borrowed back from SWMBO) to be looked at,
a sheet of all sorts of different bobbins to show the different types that can be made,
and a handout of tools and common British bobbins also with a cut-out for a Storyboard.

Wish me luck and if any photos are taken I'll try to get them posted here for those that only know the back of my head (the LOML says it's my best profile!) from my forum Avitar.

Best of luck with this. That is how  started turning many years ago, making and selling lace bobbins because my wife wanted them for her lacemaking. I used to make about 30 types, usually decorated with wire or beads, and even got into making mother and babes as well as bone bobbins. You're right about small numbers and closeup views. Best of luck. Malcolm.

I suspect, Bryan, that luck won't be needed......it'll be fine, I'm sure.

Sounds like a good evening and I would love to see pics if you get any.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Well that was a fun night.

We started off with a presentation about Westonbirt National Arboretum, it's history, trees and ongoing works - facinating place. Is anyone going to make the August bank holiday Treefest exhibition?

After the break the Hands-on part started, Robin (a sometimes contributor to this forum) was demonstrating turning off-centre ducks, John (our chairman) was showing how to set up and use a bandsaw and there was me on the bobbins.

Making a bobbin is fairly simple so the important part was getting the members to understand that there are many and various regional and national types of bobbins as well as all the different tools that can be made. Many happy members walked away with a handout and a few even had one of the bobbins I made in front of them. Hopefully it will encourage a few to have a go at small spindle work.

Our newsletter/archivest did take some photos and has promised to send them to me, when they arrive I'll post them here, but in the mean time I've attached the drawing I did for the handout to make a Lace Bobbin Storyboard.

For those of you that know, yes I have shown it a little thick at 7.5mm to 8mm not the more normal ¼” (6.25mm), but I did not want to scare off our new turners.

John,
yes we're a tough crowd, but as the chief heckler was turning Bobbins, it was not too bad!

Malcy,
I look at the Mother & Babe – Cow & Calf bobbins and am fascinated by them, any hints & tips on making them would be very gratefully received.

Looking forward to the pictures.
I will have to read up on lace bobbins, not even sure what they are  :)

Bryan glad it went well, I like the look of the bobbin in the picture, and they do sell quite well too. I sometimes turn a small hat and make them into lace bobbin dolls.

David,

I spent a week in Reg Sherwins workshop learning the skew (well as much as you can in a week). Yes he taught me to use both hand equally well, I am ambidextrous at the lathe.

(but cack-handed at just about everything else!)
