Rippled Oak bowl
« on: January 31, 2015, 07:04:34 PM »
I have been cutting and working with wood in one form or another for about 30 years and I have never seen or heard of Oak being rippled ,  however I came across a  right  ugly lump in a yard a while back which had been felled / dead for 20 + years so you can imagine how rough going it was turning this ( hard and dry !)   I have roughed out a few more and now have forearms like popeye !!  .. Terry..     Bowl is approx 12" dia and 9" deep ...

I love this characterful old oak, and this is a great example and such a good size. Great work.

Love wood like this, looks as though it is going to have waves in it. Takes skill to get a good finish like this in wood that old. And you have left the cracks! Good for you LOL.

One of those ones that would stop you in your tracks as you walk past. Very nice.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

That is the sort of bowl that makes a great centrepiece on an old refectory type table.

The colour, shape, cracks and is that scorching (?) all give it a great appearance, I'd of added patiena as well but it probably needs another 50 years on that table.
