Not sure if I like that or not, I think if it was a coloured stain I would though.

I think it's ace....I love the natural occurrence of iron stain in oak when old farm-gate fittings impart a black stain that fades back to 'normal' over a distance of a few inches, and this is so reminiscent of it.
Love it

Thank You Les...... You have seen something there we didn`t ...... have to agree it is reminiscent of iron  staining.

I really lke the overall effect. As an experiment it definitely begs to be followed up. I have seen one or two burrs that have been stained and it can look really great. One in the exhibition in Trowbridge at the moment that works well.

Hope you don't mind , do you happen to know what the parking in Trowbridge is like we are thinking of going in the van
so cannot use car parks with height restriction barriers,
  Appreciated

I can see these on display in a minimalist house as the single point of interest, they really are something that would give rise to an interesting discussion.

And to reverse them, to put the staining from the top down, as in the soot on a chimney I'd see 'the dark satanic mills'.

Thank You Bryan ...... Originally coming from Sir Titus Salt`s town ( Saltaire ), The chimneys is a good one like that and
certainly food for thought. Salts Mill is now a Art Gallery & Shopping Complex and I think Flats

Tony & Di if you head for the multi storey car park there are two other car parks that do not have height restrictions very close by. One is on the left of the round about where you would turn right to the multi the other is opposite the multi storey entrance, gotta pay in that one though.
looking at Google maps the carparks are where the travelodge is.

Thank You Steve w....... Much Appreciated

Thank You Tom...... We have had some very good feed back on these pieces, encouraging us to experiment further.
in the past 10yrs we have only used a very light single stain or colour wash, just enough to bring out the flaring in the grain

Thank You John ( BHT ) For the Info .... You have given us a centre  point to aim for.

    Kind Regards
