Ginger Pot with Lampwork Finial
« on: March 28, 2016, 05:00:40 PM »
Hi folks,

been having a bit of a play, here is a Ginger Pot with Lampwork Finial.

Some time ago I was waiting for SWMBO in an artisan jewellry shop when I got talking to the other crafts person, a lampworker, someone who makes glass beads! Though not all of them are round as you can see. She had some wonderful work and I was enthused and so bought a few, thinking I'll use them as finials on some special boxes.

So here is the first one. The body is sycamore, coloured metallic green with (what I think is) an oak lid. It stands 130mm high to the top of the lid and is 110mm wide.

I say I think it's oak. It looks like oak, it smells like oak but is oily and cuts like olive, other suggestions welcomed.

Comments & Critique as you will, and thanks for looking.

There's a lot that I like about this. I love ginger jars, the shape just works for me...and the colour is wonderful.  It's a bit of a fool's-game, trying to identify a timber species from a couple of photos, but it says 'Chestnut' to me, more-so than oak. The bead reminds me of a sea horse and I like the irregularity of the shape.

Nice one Bryan - and good to see something of yours on the forum.

I love lampwork as well and often use it in pieces. What you have done here is different and works for me with a nicce variety of colours and materials without being too fussy.

Thank you Gents,

I’d like to thank Mr Citroën for the Green colour, it is a Car Body spray.

I did want to add a painted image on the body. Something like a Japanese image of a cherry tree, but if you’d seen my attempt at painting something like that, well you get the idea!

Still, SWMBO knows a lady who can paint, so maybe a collaboration is in order, or maybe a smaller form with a simple solid colour to try first.

Mounting the glass bead was fun, I could not find a thin enough bit of silver steel to fit the hole, so I wound up with a tiny piece of the Giant bamboo (I was given by a friend), turned thin enough to go through the hole and then the lid was drilled to take the angle needed. Thankfully bamboo is remarkably strong and so the bead is secured about as well as can be done.

As the beads are made with a hole all the way through I am still playing with the idea of turning a very tiny bead on a stem to inset into the top (open) hole, but frightened that it would introduce another timber and start to be too much.

Now I have to think what to do with the other beads?

Pete,

Thanks, I have silver wire but it was not stiff enough to hold the bead upright as a finial, that's why I was looking to use silver steel and settled on bamboo.
