elm bowl
« on: June 03, 2016, 10:06:27 PM »
I found this bowl blank at the back of our timber store at the club. the grain looked good then but looks even better now. it is 11 1/2x2" and is finished with sand sealer and then a coat of OSMO oil.

that's a cracking bit of timber there and very nicely turned but i have a question.

why did you finish with sanding sealer and then apply oil?

once sealed the oil can't penetrate.

point taken with the oil. it is a hard wax oil so is there a difference with the way it is applied. I haven't used this oil before so thought this was the way to use it.

The way you have done this piece and orientated the wood has captured the grain brilliantly.

In answer to the question I use sand sealer first on Elm and Spalted woods ( beech )  as they  absorb so much
oil, the pieces go dark with them being porous woods. Before I add the oil, This keeps the colour nice and crisp.
     Kind Regards

Dennis,

How did such a stunning piece of timber lie languishing in a storeroom.

Well done on finding it and creating such a stunning piece.
