Simple yew bowls
« on: June 27, 2016, 07:31:00 PM »
These two bowls were made from pieces of yew I got from Steve Earis (in exchange for some other wood). Both are about the same dimensions, about 6" diameter and 3" high, and both finished in wax.
This is in response to GBF's request to see some simple pure shapes, now I do wonder whether he'll like them or not. I might be in for a beating, but here goes anyway. All C&C welcome.

I like the first don't like the second.
The first is a nice simple little bowl very pleasing to the eye
With the second you could not resist adding that break in the flow with the curving top, for me it has not worked.
beautiful wood like this does not need complicated shapes it just clashes with the beauty of the wood in my opinion
Have look at Bert Marsh's work everything flows smoothly.

Fuzzy,

I'm the other way around. I'm not struck on the first bowl, I don't particularly like the way it meets the table surface, but the second bowl does that well. The narrow foot limits it's use a little but otherwise I do like the shape.

...Oh who am I kidding, follow me, I know a shortcut!

Having looked at the first one again I agree it does seem to squat on the base a bit.
very difficult to do simple work and get it perfect

I like the eye peeping out the side of bowl number 2 - very clever ! :D
