This was an exercise in making a classical shape for a customer who has commissioned several pieces in the past, usually from his own stock of timber. He brought me a very gnarled and scruffy looking lump of yew log and thought it would be a laugh to make something classical out of it, so we had the idea of the vase, but the log had many deep cracks in the sapwood, so cutting through to the heartwood alone would have lost the colour contrast and greatly reduced the size of the vase. The solution was to compromise by cutting much of the sapwood away and then plant a neck (and a little foot) onto it to regain the proprotions that we'd lost. It hasn't been fully hollowed, in line with what the customer requested, we settled for boring the blank out to about 90% of its depth with a 2" forstner bit. What remained of the cracks was filled with ca adhesive and yew-dust.
Overall height is about 16" and it's finished in microcrystaline wax.
