'Shockwave'
« on: April 20, 2017, 10:23:56 PM »
Hi all

This piece I have been working on for some time along side other work. It is a piece made for 'Waves of Grain' exhibition that I was invited to submit a piece for, exhibition being in Kansa City, Missouri, June of this year.

Composite sculpture, the first in a new series of work I have been working up to but work kinda gets in the way  :)

Produced from over 100 parts, turned sycamore with shapes of which are based on water droplet formation when a large object is dropped into a deep still body of water.  Inspired by the decisions humans make, Newton's 3rd law and the resulting shock-waves that permeate around the world.

Finished in acrylic automotive spray, Intrinsic water based stains, acrylic inks and lacquer.

size is 500 mm wide x 160 mm high on base.

Just an initial picture as I have to take better pictures when I have more time.

Comments welcome.

Well that's outside of the box thinking!!! And from where I'm sitting really works.

I like the concept and the piece it's self. My eyes are drawn to the centre but then they zooming out to see the droplets explode.

Then I have the fun of looking at the shadows cast from this very impressive piece of work.

Great piece Mark, I would have never have guess it was your work in a million years.

Not sure which I admire most, the piece or your patience. I did wonder what all the bits were for now I see. Very emotive.

Thank you all for taking the time to comment.

The idea of producing composite sculptures from turned parts is something I have been developing in my head for sometime now, then I was invited to the AAW exhibition I thought it was a good time to produce the first one and it fitted in with my thoughts at the time with regards to world affairs.

Working with the lathe to produce separate parts and then for future sculptures including carving, shaping and adding mixed media is opening up a new direction for me that is almost limitless my imagination allowing.

Thanks again for you comment they are much appreciate.

Don't think you need to worry too much about that.

Well Mark this is something completely  different and certainly has the wow factor with your usual finesse at
composition and finish... An amazing interpretation of shockwaves, you have captured movement in a moment of time.
 Kind Regards Tony di

Ps How the heck are you going to wrap it for shipping

 Hi Mark,
Absolutely stunning this piece is outstanding when you do get round to taking more pictures would it be possible to take one looking down.
I am sure this will do well in the exhibition.

Ok, who on here let Mark loose with the cotton buds and the blue paint.

Yet another direction by you that works and shows that wood turning and art and combined with a little bit of colour go to another level.
Well done Mark, I would also like to see a picture looking down on this piece as I believe it would show an additional wow factor.
All the best and happy turning to you Les.

Hi Les

Thank you for your kind words much appreciated. I have finally found some time to come back in to post some more pictures below. Due to the way the piece is made the top view will be exactly the same as the side view already shown., However I hope that the pictures show a different perspective of the piece.

thank you again

Mark

Mark,

Because of the way you link your pictures from elsewhere I could not see this when I peeked in from work earlier, but wow it was worth the wait.

The colouring you've effected in this brings out a very dramatic but relaxing image, or it would do if I could stop my eyes following the parts stream out from the centre, then back in again to the dark spikes.

Truly a sculpture to amaze anyone.

This looks so good as to be unreal.
I have a bit of time on my hands next week so I will pop in and see it in the flesh.
Very very well done Mark
