Another chalice!
« on: July 03, 2017, 08:51:10 PM »
With reference to my last post about using some ancient yew for a set of commissions, I've now completed four chalices and 5 bowls. This is the latest chalice. It stands about 10" high (25cm) and has a red-sandstone cabochon. It's weird to think that a simple material like sandstone, which many of us see on a daily basis, can be so different when it's cut and polished.
I should add that each of the recipients of the chalices is fully aware that these are purely ornamental and not meant for use. Their purpose lies in the celebration of the wood and of the ancient trees from which they came.

C&C always welcome...Les

You have  certainly captured the beauty of the wood there Les. The sand stone cabochon  sets it of very well.

Les,

It may  be 'Ornamental use only' but great enough to grace any display.

Is it Sandstone or Goldstone, the flecks in it make me ask.

Hi Bryan....my understanding is that it is red sandstone...I bought several pieces from a merchant in India, who I've been buying cabochons from for four years and have never had cause to question any of my purchases' authenticity.
